Camp Kawartha is saddened by the loss of Abby MacNaughton

Camp Kawartha is saddened by the sudden death of one of our staff members. While travelling from camp to home, Abigail MacNaughton was involved in a tragic car accident. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Abby (camp nickname "Quatzy") worked as an outdoor educator and as an environmental coordinator during the summer, helping to teach children about conservation, sustainability and nature awareness. She was a dynamic, enthusiastic and treasured member of our staff.

At this time, we continue with our regular programming while providing extra support for both staff and campers who have been affected by Abby’s passing. Arrangements will be made for campers to contact their parents should they wish to do so.

Based on consultations with other camps and support organizations, we have made the campers aware of the situation, in an age-appropriate manner.

We would like to assure parents that campers are OK, we are checking in with them regularly and have professional support services in place. Leading this team is Adam Strasberg, Summer Camp Director; Jacob Rodenberg, Executive Director; Cathy Romano RN, Health Care Coordinator and President of the Camp Board of Directors; Lil Hirdes RN, Camp Nurse for Session D; and Dr. Michael Motyer and Dr. David Rutledge, our support physicians. We are also using outside support services to support the camp as a whole.

We will be updating our blog, website, and Facebook pages on a regular basis:

Abby was a positive person, and camp will continue on as she would have wanted.
